The presence of sulphur in coal imposes a serious problem for its extensive utilisation. Hence, coal desulphurisation techniques either before or after combustion is needed for prevention of air pollution. Desulphurisation of both inorganic and organic sulphur forms from Indonesian sub-bituminous coals namely Banjarmasin Haji Ali-Aliansar and Banjarmasin A was investigated using the nickel-containing complex reducing agents or Nicra. The reducing properties of this reagent have been attributed to the presence of sodium alkoxides, which increase the single electron transfer ability of the hydride and nickel species in the complex reagent. Initial results show that the ability of these reagents to remove mainly the inorganic (pyrite) sulphur from both of the Indonesian sub-bituminous coals. The success of desulphurisation was measured by the reduction of the total sulphur content of the desulphurised product, its S/C atomic ratios and ash yields of the treated coals. Further, scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) analysis was used to observe the microscopic structural changes on the coal surface after the mild reductive treatment.
