Degradation of cut and fill slopes in sedimentary rock formations along the Miri-Bintulu Road [Sarawak, Malaysia]
2001
Mokhtar Sheikh Mohamed
The Miri-Bintulu Road traverses through young sedimentary rock formations of Sarawak for some 200 km. After serving for more than 15 years, degradation of some geological structures has lead to slope instability. Soil and geological investigations were carried out to trace to the roots of the problems. The probable causes of slope failure were ascertained. Unfavourable geological features and inadequate protection against surface-runoff erosion have triggered majority of the failures. Specific inherited geological problems were highlighted. For some complex slope instabilities, safe retreat from the sliding mass was proposed with the creation of buffer zones.
