Influence of soil types, rainfall and N rate on the yield and quality of tobacco grown on alluvial soil

Field experiments were conducted in 1991 through 1993 to determine the effect of soil type, rainfall and different N rates on flue-cured tobacco. Three rates of N (20, 25 and 30 kg N/ha) were applied to tobacco grown on three alluvial soils - (i) an imperfectly drained, poorly structured sandy clay loam (granite wash), (ii) a well drained, friable sandy clay loam, and (iii) a well drained friable sandy loam. The yield of tobacco was found to be significantly affected by soil type, rainfall and N rate. During the drier year (1991), tobacco yields were similar irrespective of soil type and N rate. However, in the wetter years (1992 and 1993), the effect of soil type on tobacco yield was significant. A positive linear relationship was obtained between N rate and tobacco yield during wetter years. However, N rate did not produce significant yield difference between those obtained during the drier and wetter years. N rate had significant influence on tobacco grade index, irrespective of rainfall regimes. However, there was an interaction effect of rainfall and soil type on grade index. There was also a rainfall and N rate interaction effect on leaf nicotine content. The leaf nicotine increased as N rate increased, drier weather (1991) produced higher nicotine content than those obtained in 1992 and 1993. There was also a significant interaction effect of soil type and rainfall on leaf sugar content, which was within acceptable limit. Generally, tobacco grown on sandy clay loam and sandy loam soils had higher yield and of better quality than those grown on granite wash during normal rainfall regimes (1992 and 1993).
