These losses must be accounted for in aquafeed formulation. Nutrient delivery efficiencies should be considered along with nutrient composition and nutrient availability in formulating and manufacturing shrimp feeds where nutrient losses due to leaching in water are high and cost money. This paper discusses the concepts related to nutrient delivery in shrimp and identifies the challenges presented to practicing nutritionists, formulators and feed manufacturers in both quantifying and minimizing losses in nutrient delivery efficiencies. It outlines and discusses the following strategies available to minimize the losses: (1) decreasing feed search time by using attractants; (2) using appropriate feed size; (3) coating the raw materials or feeds with materials that will reduce the rate of leaching; and (4) choosing appropriate feed manufacturing technologies for application of ingredients and additives that are prone to leaching. Further, it discusses the use of attractants as a tool to minimize leaching losses and how an index of attractability could be used by the formulator to increase flexibility in raw material selection and cost management of shrimp feeds.
