Larvae of Spodoptera litura reared on either artificial diet or fresh foliage of Ricinus communis were evaluated as diets for the predatory bug Cantheconideafurcellata. Larvae on fresh foliage shortened the development time in the second instar but did not have an effect in subsequent instars. In terms of mortality rate no significant difference was detected between the two types of larvae for each individual instar; cumulative percentage mortality from instars 2 to 5 reared on larvae on fresh foliage was significantly lower. Larvae on artificial diet increased the weight of adult females. Larvae on artificial diet is adequate and useful for rearing C. furcellata but successive generations should not be reared continuously on this type of prey.
