Investigations on the use of a "Single Digest-Solution (SDS)" in determining essential plant nutrients in plantation tree crops in Malaysia

Ten essential elements for plant growth and productivity are routinely monitored in nutrient surveys and studies of plantation tree crops. A number of methods for the analysis of these plant nutrients has been established, and there is considerable variability in the preparation of the final digest-solutions used to determine N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Cu, Fe, Zn and B. It is, therefore, very obvious that a single standard digest-solution suitable for a precise yet rapid assay of most or all of the essential nutrients holds significant advantages. A preliminary investigation on using the digest-solution in the analysis of B (Method II) as the standard "Single-Digest-Solution (SDS)" for the evaluation of the above elements (except N) in oil palm and cocoa leaf tissues, was iniated. The "SDS" (Methods II) test results were then compared with and calibrated against the corresponding data obtained in the "Control" standard Method I. The results are as follows, (a) "SDS" K (r=0.99), Mg (r=0.98) and Mn(r=0.97) showed highly satisfactory calibration and good reproducibility ,(b) "SDS" P (r=0.91), Ca (r=0.91) and Cu (r=0.78) were only moderately to satisfactorily calibrated, (c) "SDS" Zn (r=0.45) reproducibility was poor. Preliminary findings todate seem to indicate that the "Single-Digest-Solution (SDS)" of Method II has certain promise and applications in nutrient surveys preferably for the oil palm.
