The role of ethylene receptor ETRI gene in ethylene perception and ripening induction inı papaya will be investigated. Using a tomato tETRI cDNA clone as probe, we have isolatedı and partially sequenced a 2.6 kb papaya carETRI homolog from the library of ripeningı fruits. The deduced amino acid sequence of carETRI shares a high identity with ETRIı clones from Passiflora edulis (75%), Cucumis sativus (75%), Citrus sinensis (73%),ı Cucumis melo (73%) and Lycopersicum esculentum (69%). Northern blot analysis indicatesı that carETRI expression increased through the earlier stages of ripening, and that the levelsı of the mRNA transcripts were markedly lower in developing and maturing fruits than inı ripening fruits.ı
