Propagation of threatened herbal species, ant plants by in vitro technique
2002
Norziha A. | Noranizan A.
Ant plants are tuberous plants, which displayed some interesting symbiotic relationship with ants. The plants provide shelter/food to the ants and in return the ants provide nutrients/protection to the plant. Ant plants are claimed to possess anti-cancer properties and also valued as ornamental. At present, the ant plants are being taken out from the jungle by herbal practitioner and plant hobbyist. Therefore, there is a need to propogate and to conserve the plant before it becomes extinction. The ant plants were propagated via tissue culture because the seeds are difficult to obtain. The explants were grown on MS media supplemented with hormones (NAA, BAP and Kinetin). Planlets were observed on MS media supplemented with 1mg/L NAA.
