Phytosociological survey as a tool for forest recovery assessment

Recovery assessment is required before any sivicultural treatment is to be carried out in any logged-over forest. The information from this assessment can be used to formulate the rehabilitation requirement for that particular area. At present, one of the strategies applied by the Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia is to carry out Post-Felling inventory, which is between two to five years after harvesting in all harvested forest areas. Another approach towards this objective that can be complement the Post-F Inventory is the natural recovery assessment by use of phytosociological (vegetation) studies. The phytosociological studies will be made in the logged-over area(s). Simultaneously, similar studies will be carried out in secondary and regenerating forests near the concerned area(s) or areas with similar vegetations features as the concerned area(s). The studies will provide vital information on the succession processes which take place after harvesting. Thes data together with data from the pre and post-felling inventories could be analyzed throughly to elucidate the potential species suitable to be planted on that particular logged-over area. This paper will highlight on one such study which was carried out in several forest areas in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia.
