Antimicrobial resistance in coastal waters of Malaysia
2011
You, Kian Giap | Bong, Chui Wei | Lee, Choon Weng
The susceptibility of 33 bacterial isolates from tropical coastal waters in Peninsular Malaysia to 15 different types of antibiotics. We found that the macrolide, sulfonamide, tetracycline and mecillinam resistance were major among the bacterial isolates. Resistance to chloramphenicol, ampicillin, vancomycin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole was less common. All of the bacterial strains were susceptible to meropenem, imipenem, and ciprofloxacin. Most isolates were resistant to two or more antibiotics. Findings from this study have indicated the prevalence of antibiotic resistance bacteria in Malaysian coastal waters and these bacteria constitute a potential threat to public health risk.
