There is limited report on the antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella Typhimirium and Salmonella Enteritidis isolates from duck sources worldwide, and in Malaysia such report is unavailable. Thus this study was conducted to determine the antibiotic resistance of S. Typhimirium and S. Enteritidis duck isolates. A total of 52 Salmonella serovars made up of 37 S. Typhimirium and 15 S. Enteritidis were tested against 13 antimicrobial agents. Overall, 26% (127/481) of S. Typhimirium were resistant to the antibiotics tested while it was 25% (48/195) for S. Enteritidis. Both serovars were resistant to erythromycin (100) but susceptible (100%) to ceftriaxone, cephalothin, gentamicin, ciprofloxacin and cefotaxime. Higher resistant to nalidixic acid (81% vs 60%) and tetracycline (78% vs. 60%) was observed for S. Typhimirium and S. Enteritidis, respectively. MAR index ranged from 0.08 to 0.62. One S. Enteritidis was resistant to 8 antibiotics (TeNaAmpSxtCNorES) and exhibited the highest MAR index of 0.62. The resistant profile TeNaAmpE was consistent with one each of S. Typhimirium and S. Enteriditis. There was a tendency of isolates originating from the same source to show similar antimicrobial resistant profile. These results are useful for monitoring changes that may occur over time and for developing efficient risk management strategies.
