Aerial parts of Goniothalamus macrophyllus and Goniothalamus tortilipetalus were collected from Pasoh Forest Reserve and subjected to hydro-distillations for 8 h. Essential oils obtained were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. The results showed that the oils possessed the following major compounds: G.macrophyllus: twig; geranyl acetate (45.5%), linalool (12.7 %) and geraniol (17.0%), root; cyperene (9.8 %), geranyl acetate (9.4 %) and camphene(7.5%) and G. tortilipetalus: leaves; O-cymene (43.0%), piperitone (11.5%)and 1,8-cineole (5.8 %). Antimicrobial activities of all the oils were evaluated against 11 microorganisms including MRSA Staphylococcus aureus, gram positive bacteria, gram negative bacteria and dermatophytic fungi using single concentration test and broth micro-dilution methods. All the oils inhibited the growth of test microorganisms except Pseudomonas aeruginosa (gram negative bacteria). The gram positive bacteria were more sensitive than gram negative bacteria and fungus. The antimicrobial activity could be due to the presence of geraniol and linalool which had been reported to have significant activities.
