The digestive system of the western honey bee (Apis mellifera) is frequently parasitized by the microsporidium Nosema ceranae and the recently recognised trypanosoma Lotmaria passim Schwarz, 2014, whose infection dynamics in cases of coinfection is unknown. The annual dynamics of infection with endoparasites N. ceranae and L. passim was monitored on ten LR hives, in which the colonies were naturally infected with the two parasites. All the hives were located on the same apiary in Vi?nji?evo (Srem). Throughout the experiment, from each hive a minimum of 60 live adult bees were sampled from the hive entrance (from March 2016 to March 2017), every month, with the exception of winter months. Real-time PCR method was developed to enable concurrent detection and quantification of L. passim, whilst the infection level with N. ceranae was determined by spore counting. The infection level with N. ceranae was significantly higher than the one with L. passim. Significant positive correlation between the infection levels with both parasites pointed to their similar annual dynamics, whilst the differences in the infection level within each species suggest that there is seasonality in the parasite burdens they impose. The method which was developed and validated in this research enables in depth insight into the dynamics of L. passim infection and the understanding of interaction in concurrent infection with some other species of endoparasites.
