The article highlights the problems of creating the conditions for economic growth and sustainable development of agriculture. The study notes the role and importance of agriculture in the economic and social spheres, and the impact of agriculture on the development of many industries such as mechanical engineering, mining for the production of mineral fertilizers, the processing industry. The study examines the course for sustainable development of agriculture and rural areas. The research demonstrates the developed strategy for the agro-industrial complex, which provides not only the basic needs of the population and secures Russia's active participation in the new international division of labor, but also preserves the natural environment. The research predicts positive results of a successful implementation of the proposed agricultural development strategy, including prerequisites for sustainable growth of the agro-industrial complex and agriculture, a significant reduction in the share of unprofitable enterprises, reducing gaps in the standard of living of urban and rural populations, qualitative changes in the nature of foreign economic relations of the Russian agro-industrial complex, restoration of the material, technical, personnel, and environmental potential of the agricultural sector of the Russian economy
