Determining some physical and mechanical properties of heat treated wood material: Iroko as a sample

Heating of wood is a method that used for the purpose of drying and improving undesirable properties of wood from ancient times until today. Currently, this process is used for the same reasons.In this study, the physical and mechanical properties of iroko wood which is heat-treated with "ThermoWood" process at 190 ºC and 120 minutes were investigated. This wood species was heated with "ThermoWood" process. Heat treated samples were compared with their control (untreated) groups.As physical properties; oven-dry density, air-dry density, shrinkage and swelling, as mechanical properties; bending strength, modulus of elasticity in bending and compression strength parallel to the grain were determined and change ratios were calculated comparing with control groups. Also, the electrical resistance of the samples were measured with shigometer in different moistures.As a result when heat treated samples were compared its own control groups it was found that different changes ratios for both parameters. While decrease rates of volumetric shrinkage, volumetric, swelling, oven-dry density, air-dry density, compression strength, bending strength, modulus of elasticity and electrical resistance at 190 ºC temperature and 120 minutes were found %7, %4,58, %13,2, %19, %15,7, %25, %27, %50 respectively.
