Sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) is primarily a self-incompatible plant, however, gene mutations enabling its self-compatibility exist. Self-compatibility very importantly simplifies management of commercial orchards and lowers risk of loss/lowering crop yield occurring in self-incompatible varieties. Self-compatible varieties are therefore a modern trend in a cherry breeding. As only few commercially successful self-compatible varieties with high quality fruits exists, VŠÚO Holovousy focused in one program on their breeding. 105 potentially self-compatible genotypes with mutated S4´ allele have been prepared. Using molecular methods 77 genotypes carrying this self-compatible S-allele have been identified.
