A single prolactin receptor form in tilapia species?

Because of the major implication of prolactin (PRL) in endocrine control of fish osmoregulation, numerous studies on the role of this hormone have been conducted in one species considered as a euryhaline model, tilapia. In this species, two forms of PRL (tiPRLI and tiPRLII) with significant structural differences have been well characterized. 1, 2 Similar and different biological activities have been reported for these two PRL forms which refer, for example, to ionic exchange regulation and pigment-dispersing effects in chromatophores. These results raised questions about which receptor mechanisms at the level of target organs would explain such biological differences between the two tiPRL forms. As a first hypothesis, one naturally considers the presence of a PRL receptor form for each tiPRL. In order to clarify this problem, characterization of PRL receptors in tilapia was performed using both binding studies and molecular approaches. This review summarizes the most recent information obtained on this receptor, which suggests the presence of a single PRL receptor form in tilapia target organs.
