Need for Clear Concept of Soil Conservation in planning
2022

A highly developed and standard nomenclature is essential for an accu- rate description of soil conservation in surveying, planning, legislation, education and training, administration, assessment of progress, research, publications, etc. Lack of such a terminology is bound to result in confusion for want of a common understand- ing. The Soil Conservation Society of India can do a lot in this respect. The nomenclature for use in the expression of any scientific knowledge developes gra- dually. This is true of soil conservation also. As a science it has to keep in step with the knowledge and experience gained in other parts of the world. The terminology has been fairly exhaustively worked out in the U.S.A., Australia, Palestine, etc. It has often been observed in India that a number of terms are loosely used to convey different meanings at different times, which is very dangerous; at this stage when soil conser- vation forms an important part of our Five Year Plans and it is expected to progress fast covering the entire country, a lot of harm can result in a short time.
