Similarity in design aspects of Soil Conservation Measures in the Catchment and Commended Areas of Irrigation Projects
2022
Murty, V.V.N.
Every irrigation project has two marked areas, the catchment area which feeds the run off for storage and then the commanded area Where this stored water is utilised for crop production. Land use adjustments in both these areas are essential for the success of the project. The catchment area needs protection from soil erosion to retard sediment accumulation in the reservoir while the commanded area has to be reformed to suit irrigated agriculture. These two tasks may appear to be difTerent but basically these have large similarities. One of the very important factors is that it will be most ideal if these two jobs are started simultaneous}y well in advance of the actual formation of the reservoir for storage purposes. The protection of the catchment area involves large scale soil conservation measures and the engineering measures of soil conservation have a significant part. Soil conservation measures in the catchment area require time for execution and some nore time in being effective to reduce the sediment yield of the catchment. Similarly the development of commanded area should start well in advance such that the storage waters are put to the best use as and when they are available.
