Effectiveness of liquid biofertiliser on vanilla orchid

Vanilla planifolia is a climbing terrestrial orchid, not a native to the country but found to be suitable in the warm humid tropical climate of Malaysia. Natural vanillin, extracted from the vanilla pod, is extensively used in food industry as a flavouring agent. There are three approaches in crop nutrition, namely, organic farming, integrated nutrient management and chemical farming. The organic farming approach is ideal for vanilla orchid cultivation. Vanilla loves a lot of organic matter and decomposed mulch. Bioinoculants such as fluorescent Pseudomonas, Azospirillum and phosphorus solubilising bacteria are beneficial for the promotion of plant growth. In the present study, liquid biofertiliser, "Natural farming" compost and commercial mycorrhizal inoculants were evaluated on their effectiveness on vanilla plants in a greenhouse trial. Application of liquid biofertiliser containing phosphate solubilising bacteria (T6) and “Natural farming" compost (T1) resulted in significant growth response of vanilla plants compared to other treatments.
