A study was conducted to investigate the potential of JPSE fertilizer on the growth performance and nutrients content of sweet corn (Zea mays) compared to conventional farming. Jindalai Plant Sports Elite (JPSE) is an organic fertilizer developed by the North Koreans for organic farming, produced from seaweed. Results for the dry matter yield showed significant effect of JPSE fertilizer over the intensive farming, which is based on fertilizer recommendation by the Agriculture Department, Malaysia. Leaf macronutrient, that is N, P, K contents, increased significantly in JPSE fertilizer treated plants. The micronutrients showed significant difference for Zn and Cu with JPSE treatment. Though the concentrations of Ca, Mg, Fe and Mn are not significantly difference between both treatments, there are increasing trend in these nutrients with JPSE treatment. From these results, we found that application of JPSE fertilizer led to improved growth performance and nutrient uptake by sweet corn, and we foresee that JPSE has the potential for improving yield of medicinal and herbal plants.
