Authoritarianism as Obstacle to Development: Example of Sugar Industry in Venezuela
2020
Copik, Jan | Haman, Michael | Skolnik, Milan
The article deals with the situation in sugar industry in Venezuela which, during the reign of President Nicolas Maduro, resulted in a dramatic decline in production, imports, and therefore sugar consumption by the Venezuelans. In this South American country, this basic food commodity is almost absent, and this absence exacerbates the already bad political and economic situation. In the article, the development of the sugar sector is examined in a broader political framework, from the agreement of the three ruling parties in Punto Fijo, through the government of Hugo Chávez, to the regime of Nicolas Maduro. The paper draws from several data sources and uses statistical data on Venezuelan production, imports, and consumption to compare global and Latin American contexts.
