The vole outbreak during 2019 caused considerable damage to sugar beet. We therefore used this situation to evaluate the degree of damage to the harvested tubers. The survey took place during the sugar beet harvest period (October). At the selected locality in South Moravia, a total of 569 tubers were checked and sorted into four groups according to the degree of damage (i.e. undamaged, damaged up to 20%, damaged 20-50% and damaged over 50%). A total of 83.5% of the examined sample was damaged, more than half of the checked tubers (53%) showed moderate to heavy damage (20-50% and over 50%). The damage was therefore significant and can be estimated in the order of tons of consumed mass per hectare. However, the real damage needs to be increased by unaccounted damage that occurred during the growing season (i.e. secondary damage caused by pathogenic microorganisms and damage caused during harvest: broken and damaged tubers that then remained in the field). The result of the survey indicates the significance of the common vole as a major pest of sugar beet. It is important that more intense research is carried out on this issue.
