Phenology and fruit set of some vegetal understory species of two intervened forest in the Northeast of Costa Rica | Fenología y éxito reproductivo de algunas especies vegetales del sotobosque en dos bosques intervenidos del Noroeste de Costa Rica

Se evaluó la fenología reproductiva, el éxito reproductivo y la visitación por insectos de 9 especies del sotobosque pertenecientes a las familias Palmae (Asterogyne martiana, Geonoma congesta y Prestoea decurrens), Melastomataceae (Clidemia epiphytica, Conostegia montana y Miconia simplex) y Rubiaceae (Psychotria elata, P. glomerulata y P. suerrensis). El estudio se llevó a cabo en la vertiente atlántica de Costa Rica en dos bosques húmedos tropicales con estructura y composición vegetal similar. Los bosques difieren en cuanto a intervención (en términos del año y grado de intervención) y al aislamiento. Fueron seleccionadas 10 plantas de cada especie, excepto para P. decurrens y C. montana de las cuales se usó solamente 7 individuos. De los individuos seleccionados se evaluó la fenología reproductiva usando escalas fenológicas las cuales ordenan las etapas reproductivas (desde botones florales hasta frutos maduros). Para efectos de este estudio, se definió el éxito reproductivo como la proporción de flores que llegan a frutos. En ese sentido, fueron seleccionadas 4 inflorescencias (para las melastomatáceas y rubiáceas) y una espiga en cada racimo (para las palmas) en cada planta de las cuales se contó el número inicial de flores y la producción máxima de frutos por inflorescencia. Así mismo, se determinó la proporción por planta de las inflorescencias que no fructificaron (por no haber completado el ciclo), que desaparecieron (que fueron comidas o se cayeron) y las que secaron. Se avaluó la entomofauna diurna visitante a través de observaciones quincenales, durante un día completo (de 7:00 am hasta 5:00 pm), de las especies y número de individuos por especie que llegaron a las plantas. En general, el comportamiento fenológico fue muy similar en los dos bosques, sin embargo no se puede sacar conclusiones en cuanto a los patrones debido a la corta duración del estudio (6 meses). El éxito reproductivo fue bajo para las familias Palmae y Rubiaceae y sin diferencias estadísticas significativas entre bosques. Melastomataceae presentó valores considerablemente altos en los dos bosques pero igual sin diferencias significativas. Al parecer la intervención y aislamiento del bosque no afectan el éxito reproductivo de las especies en estudio, posiblemente debido a que poseen polinizadores generalistas y la apomixis en las melastomataceas. La visitación de insectos fue baja por lo que solo una descripción muy general es presentada en este trabajo. Al final del documento se presentan algunas recomendaciones que intentan cerrar algunas lagunas dejadas en este trabajo.

We studied the reproductive phenology, fruit set and insect visitation of 9 understory species which belong to Palmae, Melastomataceae and Rubieceae families (Asterogyne martiana, Geonoma congesta, Prestoea decurrens, Clidemia epiphytica, Conostegia montana, Miconia simplex, Psychotria elata, P. glomerulata y P. suerrensis). This study was carried out in the Atlantic part of Costa Rica in two primary tropical lowland rain forest with similar vegetation structure and composition. One of them was under selective logging and silvicultural treatments and it is not protected from hunting (La Tirimbina) and the other is still under protection and conservation (La Selva). Ten individuals of each species were selected, except for P. decurrens y C. montana from which we selected 7 plants due to the difficulty to find out more individuals. From these individuals, we evaluated the reproductive phenology using scales that grade the phenological events, from floral buds to fruiting. For this study we define the fruit set as the proportion of flowers that became fruits. In this way we selected 4 inflorescences of each individual and the initial number of flowers in each inflorescence were count, as well as, the maximum number of fruits produced. From this we calculate the proportion of flowers that become fruits. At same time we evaluated the number of inflorescences that did not flower (because did not complete the cycle), disappeared (that is, were fall or were eaten by animals) and dried. The visitation by insects was evaluated monthly, during one complete day (from 7 am to 5 pm). We found that phenological behavior of the studied species is congruent between the to forests, although we cannot conclude nothing about the phenological patterns due to the short period of this study (6 months). The fruit set was very low to the Palmae and Rubiaceae and there is no difference between forests. For Melastomataceae, the fruit set was high in the two forests, probably due to apomixis or because this family is normally generalists in the pollination behavior. The visitation was low and due to this we present here a general description of the insect visiting the plants. Finally, some studies are recommended in order to fill the gaps of this work.
