Approaches to assessment and sustainable use of non-timber forest resources (on the example of Mtskheta-Mtianeti region).
2021
The paper discusses the need to establish approaches to sustainable management of non-timber forest products, which primarily involves assessing resource potential, which in turn defines the biological and operational reserves that can be obtained within the framework of sustainability. Finally, it is necessary to study the compliance between the market requirements of the resource and the operational reserves and to develop sustainable management operational plans in order to prevent excessive extraction, which damages not only the future potential of the non- timber resources, which is the object of unsustainable extraction, but also forest habitats in general. The issue is discussed on the example of a pilot study on the assessment of rosehip yield in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region. Rosehip is considered one of the non-timber forest resources, which is actively extracted for commercial purposes. Mtskheta-Mtianeti region is distinguished by the diversity and abundance of non-timber forest products, especially wild fruits and medicinal plants, which in general clearly shows the high resource potential of non-timber forest products in Georgia and the importance of its sustainable use.
