At the Institute of Horticulture, the second half of May is marked by the blooming of lilacs. A lilac garden with its own Collection of varieties and hybrids is a favorite for recreation and a tourist object that attracts with its color form and the richness of scents. Although the selection of new varieties Dobele has not been performed for many years, in the existing one excellent specimen are still found in the hybrid material, which also deserve their name. The last ones several new varieties have been released in the years, the names of which are related to people special to the Institute of Horticulture and Dobele. The variety ‘Maestro Jānis Zirnis’ is tribute to the great conductor, musician and pedagogue Jānis Zirnis. The variety blooms moderately early. The flowers are simply medium-sized crimson, becoming lighter when flowering. Inflorescences are medium in size. The bush is medium high. The variety blooms moderately and regularly. The variety ‘Rudīte Ruško’ is tribute to the opera singer, vocal teacher and concert producer Rudīte Ruško (1966–2018). The variety blooms very early, blooms profusely. The flowers are filled pink violet, medium size, flower buds few darker. The inflorescences are loose, lacy, and medium in size. The shrubs are medium high and relatively compact. The variety ‘Hilda Vīka’ is tribute to a painter, writer and artist in memory of Hilda Vīka (Hilda Vīka-Eglīte) (1897–1963). The variety blooms moderately early, blooms moderately. The flower buds are pinkish purple. The flowers are purple, medium-sized, and stuffed. The bushes are large, wide, and strong. The variety ‘August Bielenstein’ is dedicated to the prominent resident of Dobele, Lutheran pastor and linguist of Baltic German origin, August Bielenstein (1826–1907). The variety blooms moderately early, blooms profusely. The flowers are large, white and simple. The inflorescences are large, firm medium dense. The bushes are medium high and compact.
