Estructura y funcionamiento de un bosque pluvial del proyecto internacional del ecosistema amazónico: Datos preliminares sobre crecimiento y regeneración natural en un estudio piloto | Structure and functions of a rainforest in the international amazon ecosystem project: preliminary data on growth rates and natural regeneration from a pilot study.

Basic research on floristic and geometric stand structure, tree form, soils and microclimates was carried out in the area of the international research project on rainforest ecosystems in San Carlos de Rio Negro, Venezuela. The present contribution refers to the sites of forest associations growing on spodosols.In the project a permanent study sector is maintained, in which 13 totes of 10 x 10 m each were cleared for biomesa analysis. Adjacent to this sector, 6 experimental plots of 50 x 100 m each were established. All experimental totes were cleaned in December 1975 and three of them were burned in February 1976. In 1979, mime measurements were made on a 2 ha area of the undisturbed study sector, on all biomass plots, and on one burned and one unburned experimental plot. In the undisturbed forest plots it was found that the diameter increments of trees with DBH greater than 13 cm were relatively low, reaching values of less than 1 i mm per year and very variable, with a standard deviation of ± 200%. Annual growth rates and volumes reduced by tree mortality were equalized, reaching approximately 2 8 m3 per ha, or 0 8% of the green aerial biomass. In the biomass analysis plots and in the naturally open clearings, regeneration was composed of the same species, and initially a similar floristic composition was recorded; however, the biomass analysis plots that had received a drastic treatment progressed more slowly and exhibited a lower density than the other natural plots. Natural regeneration exhibited marked differences in composition, distribution and dominance between burned and unburned plots, but there were no significant differences in average height growth. No individuals of Cecropia -a pioneer species- were found in the natural clearings, and only a few individuals in the biomass plots, but in the burned plots it is the dominant plant. In the cleared but not burned plots, Cecropia was dominant only during the first 2-3 years and then was displaced by other species, including typically emergent species and those that will occupy both the upper and lower strata, forming thin communities similar to the original stands.

Se llevaron a cabo investigaciones básicas sobre la estructura florística y geométrica de los rodales, la forma de los arboles, los suelos y los microclimas en el área del proyecto internacional de investigación en ecosistemas del bosque pluvial, en San Carlos de Rio Negro, Venezuela. La presente contribución se refiere a los sitios de asociaciones forestales que crecen sobre espodosoles.En el proyecto se mantiene un sector de estudio permanente, en la que se limpiaron 13 totes, de 10 x 10 m coda uno, para análisis de biomesa Adyacentes a este sector, se establecieron 6 lotes experimentales de 50 x 100 m cada uno. Todos los totes experimentales se limpiaron en diciembre de 1975 y tres de ellos fueron quemados en febrero de 1976. En 1979 se hicieron mimes mediciones en un área de 2 ha del sector de estudio no perturbado, en todos los lotes de biomasa, y en un lote experimental quemado y en otro no quemado. En las parcelas del bosque no perturbado se encontró que los incrementos diamétricos de los arboles con DAP superior a 13 cm eran relativamente bajos, alcanzando valores menores de 1 i mm por año y muy variables, con una desviación estándar de ± 200%. Las tasas de crecimiento anual y los volúmenes reducidos por mortalidad de arboles se igualaron, alcanzando aproximadamente 2 8 m3 par ha, o sea 0 8% de la biomase aérea verde. La regeneración natural exhibió diferencias marcadas en composiciones, distribución y dominancia entre los lotes quemados y los no quemados, pero no hubo deferencias significativas del crecimiento promedio en altura. No se encontraron individuos de Cecropia -especie pionera- en los claros naturales, y solo unos pocos individuos en los lotes de biomasa, pero en los lotes quemados es la planta dominante. En los Iotes que se limpiaron pero no se quemaron, Cecropia fue dominante solo durante los primeros 2-3 años y luego fue desplazada por otras especies, entre éstas se cuentan especies típicamente emergentes y las que van a ocupar tanto los estratos superiores como los inferiores, formando finamente comunidades similares a los rodales originales.
