Resistance to ryegrass mosaic virus in Lolium perenne L.
1983
Salehuzzaman, M. | Wilkins, P.W.
Few wild Lolium perenne L. (perennial ryegrass) plants were found highly resistant to ryegrass mosaic virus. They had two distinct types of resistance under independent genetic control: resistance to infection and post-infection resistance. Resistance to infection was non-strain specific and was controlled by several additive genes. Post-infection resistance was strain-specific and was governed by two pairs of recessive genes. A project to transfer the resistance from L. perenne to L. multi-florum (Italian ryegrass) was started. It involved repeated cycles of backcrossing the highly resistant plants with the susceptibe L. multiflorum (female) parent and selecting resistant plants from the F2. The third cycle is in progress
