A study of the interrelations of K, Ca, and Mg on their uptake patterns and root development of plants growth in water culture

The purpose of this study was to elucidate comprehensively and systematically the interrelations of K, Ca and Mg on their uptake patterns and root development of plants. Rice plants cultured in nutrient solution were supplied with two levels of concentrations (40 ppm and 20 ppm) of K, Ca and Mg with varying combinations. The application of different nutrient treatments caused significant changes at different levels on root development and the uptake characteristics of these cations. Combined nutrient treatment of K, Ca and Mg with similar concentrations showed a promotive effect and accelerated their uptake and root development. In the nutrient treatment where 1/2 Ca and 1/2 Mg were used in solution, relatively higher values were obtained as compared to 1/2 K, Ca and Mg treatment. 1/2 K in solution with Ca and Mg resulted in depression in K uptake indicating K-Ca ad and/or K-Mg antagonism. It may be concluded that although the uptake of any oen of the cations, differing in their concentrations greatly impeded by the remaining two, their combined effect of similar concentrations were promotive or synergistic
