Corn-soybean intercrop as influenced by pre-plant tillage, crop geometry and density [study conducted in the Philippines]

A field experiment was conducted during wet and dry season of 1981 and 1982, respectively, in the same location at the Central Experiment Station of UPLB, College, Laguna. The objectives were: 1) to determine if a better yield advantage could be obtained from corn/soybean intercrop than presently reported; 2) to determine the influence of tillage, crop geometry and density on the intercrop and to evaluate the economics of production; 3) to determine the factors controlling the apparent grain yields of corn and soybeans. The corn variety used was Philippine DMR-2 while soybean cultivar used was UPLB-Sy-2. The experiment was laid out in a strip split-plot design. Zero- and conventional pre-plant tillage served as the main plot, two intercrop treatments with monocrop checks served as the sub plot while the two crop densities served as the sub-sub plot. The result showed that the dry season trial performed better than that of wet season because of good irrigation in the former and poor rainfall distribution in the latter
