Effect of different rice cultivars, seedling ages and nitrogen application methods on weed population and grain yields in transplanted rice [study conducted in the Philippines]

Experiments evaluated different varieties and cultural practices in minimizing weed competition in wetland rice (Oryza sativa L.). In the first experiment where grasses were dominant, grain yields varied with cultivars and seedling ages. Old seedlings (45-day-old) of shorter, early maturing (110 days) IR 36 had low yields in both weeded and unweeded conditions due to reduced tiller production. Conversely, taller and late-maturing IR 42 c ultivar appeared less sensitive to transplanting age. Without weeding, IR 42 transplanted with 45-day-old seedlings appeared more competitive with weeds than IR 36. In the second experiment conducted in an area heavily infested with Scirpus maritimus L., no yield differences were observed among N application methods regardless of cultivars, seedling ages, and weeding regime
