The effect of time of flooding at various growth stages on grain yield and growth of IR-36 and Suweon 258 was studied. Grain yield of IR-36 (indica) was decreased by 60% and Suweon 258 (Indica japonica) by 70% if after transplanting, plots were not flooded until heading provided during the first 10 to 25 days from transplanting soil moisture tension at 10 cm depth reached more than 50 cb. Decreased grain yield for both varieties was principally attributed to low panicle number and reduced filling of grain
