Anthelmintic trials against gastro-intestinal helminths of goats, 3: the efficacy of febantel

The efficacy of febantel was tested against naturally occurring gastro-intestinal helminths in goats on the basis of pre- and post-treatment faecal egg counts and larval cultures. At the dose rate of 5 mg/kg body-weight, the compound was found to be 89% effective in eliminating Haemonchus and 11% in reducing egg output by 99%; 90% in eliminating Trichostrongylus and 10% in reducing egg output by 94%; and in conclusive against Strongyloides. The compound appeared to have excelent effect against Moniezia expansia but the number of animals infected with this tapeworm were too few to allow for any firm conclusions to be made. No adverse effects were observed in any of the treated animals
