During 1978-1981 at the Research Institute for Cereals and Industrial Crops-Fundulea, genetic factors determining the male sterility and pollen restauration of pollen of C and El Salvador type have been transferred into the parental inbred lines of the maize hybrids F 308, F 315, F 350, F 370, F 412 and only the C Type into the lines of Fundulea 102 and Suceava 108 hybrids. The results obtained were studied during 1982-1983 under different pedoclimatic conditions of Romania (Research Institute for Cereals and Industrial Crops-Fundulea, Research Station for Irrigated Crops-Valu lui Traian, Agricultural Research Station Simnic and other research units belonging to the Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences network and the State Comission for Variety Testing and Registration. The results obtained show that the hybrids obtained on male sterile cytoplasm of C type and of El Salvador type behaved similarly with those obtained on a normal cytoplasm, in almost all locations. Exceptions were hybrids Fundulea 308 and 350 obtained on cytoplasm of C type, which in 2 of the locations achieved a significatly lower yield and the hybrids F 315, F 370 and F 412 obtained on cytoplasm of C and El Salvador type, respectively, which achieved higher yields, in only one location. The parental male sterile forms of the hybrids under study did not exhibit differences, as compared to their malefertile analogues regarding their behaviour at anthesis and the grain yield. The C and El Salvador male sterile types depending on their specific reaction are recommended to be used in maize seed production.
