Results of utilisation, of landsat imagery concerning excess moisture in Romanian Lower Danube Plain

This paper deals with the results of utilisation of LANDSAT imagery, correlated with pedological ground data, concerning waterlogging (excess moisture) within Romanian Lower Danube Plain (43,830 sq. km) in 1975-1981. The yearly changes in extension and size of waterlogged areas point out that this phenomenon is strongly related with annual rainfall surplus to which irrigation and seepage (within endyked enclosures) are often associated. The largest waterlogged surfaces on loess, fluviatile and sandy, head depositis were found. According to genetical soil type the main part of those areas were located on chernozems and alluvial soils. Therefore, the excess moisture affected lands belong mostly to the best classes of suitability for agricultural use. Using as criteria the natural general drainage of terrains (drainage density) and the effective occurrence of excess moisture in 1981 a general map of waterlogging risk at a scale of 1:1,000,000, of Romanian lower danube plain was compiled. This map provides a very useful base for waterlogging monitoring by remote sensing techniques, and associated with aditional researches it could be used even as a general base for long term planning of drainage works too.
