Ergot (Claviceps purpurea (Fr.) Tul.) is occurring in the Federal Republic of Germany on grasses more or less frequently. In this publication some data about the fungus on cultivated and wild grasses are reviewed. A short report is given on the occurrence of grasses, ergot poisoning of animals and the role of grasses as intermediate hosts for cereals. Furthermore, the host specifity of the fungus and control measures are discussed. In the Federal Republic in grass seed production at present only cultural practices e.g. deep ploughing and crop rotation are recommended for ergot control
