The 1986 assessment of damage to forests and the second report of the advisory council of research on forest decline/air pollution demonstrate the present state of knowledge about 'Waldsterben' in the Federal Republic of Germany. As a whole, a high level of damage is confirmed. Although several coniferous species seem to be showing a slight recovery, damage to deciduous trees has increased alarmingly. Research on causes has strengthened the previously won complex image. Except for the direct and indirect effects of various air pollutants, no scientifically plausible explanation or solid hypothesis for most types of damage has been found
