Heterosis in maize (Zea mays L.)
1987
Debnath, S.C.
In nine maize inbreds and their 36 F(1)s significant and positive heterosis over mid and better parent was observed. Among the component characters, highest percentages of heterosis was observed in number of kernels per row followed by ear length and 1000-kernel weight. Heterosis percentages for ear diameter and kernel rows per ear were low. Seven crosses with highly significant desirable heterobeltiosis for grain yield and some of its attributes were proposed to be involved in breeding programmes for exploiting their heterotic performance. It was also suggested to evaluate six single cross hybrids over locations and years for their possible use as commercial cultivars.
