The zone inhibition pattern and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of different brands of ampicillin, oxy and chlorotetracyclines and chloramphenicol were studied against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli test organisms. The MIC values of all the ampicillin and chloramphenicol brands exhibited higher values against both the test organisms compared to that of the reported MICs of the respective pure drugs against these test organisms. A significant variation in zone inhibition pattern of ampicillin in different brands was observed during the investigation and was important with respect to antibiotic administration and therapeutic response. Except for chlorotetracycline, all these brand preparations were also tested against different bacterial isolates from plant and chicken's intestine, which exhibited potent activities towards these isolates compared to that of E. coli test organisms.
