Yield and yield contributory attributes of a fodder grass (Panicum antidotale retz.) under saline conditions
1988
Varshney, K.A. | Baijal, B.D.
Relative performances of different yield parameters in a fodder grass (Pancium antidotale Retz.) under various soil salinity regimes were worked out in pot culture experiments. The total dry matter production (DMP) increased significantly, whereas plant height, spikelet number per plant, seed number per spikelet and 1000 seed weight decreased considerably with an increase in electrical conductivities of soil saturated extracts. Such a decreasing trend in aforesaid parameters was, however, found accompanied by concurrent decrease in dry matter accumulated in shoots and revealed more relevance to the explanation of the variations in total DMP (biological yield). The soil salinity induced increase in total dry matter production was observed to be due to increased dry weight shared by roots but not by shoots.
