In 3 years field trials the pathogen/host complex Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary on winter rapeseed was examined. Different climatic conditions during the experiments in 1983 to 1985 caused a very heterogenic germination of the sclerotia. Germination of the sclerotia in spring took place after reaching certain temperature and moisture thresholds. Ascospore dispersal in the controlled depots depended on a reaction of contrary weather conditions and conducted to first steps of a negative prognosis. The mathematical mode of a discriminant analysis assisted to distinguish between two groups - 'tolerant infection' and 'non-tolerant infection' - = in disease incidence below or above a fixed threshold of 10 per cent infected plants. In vi0677ew of a possible infection or the period of infecton and practicable control measurements the phenological data of the host 'start of flowering' and 'full flowering' were used as criteria for the statistical model of prognosis. During that stages of host development an identical function was f
