Ten burley varieties of Nicotiana tabacum L., 45 F1 hybrids and 45 F2 populations among them were evaluated at Chonju Experiment Station, Korea Ginseng and Tobacco Research Inst. in 1985. Components of variation and heritabilities for yield, days to flower, stalk height, leaves per plant and leaf length were estimated. Dominant2048effects of genes were significant, but much smaller than additive effects on each of five characters. All of the five characters were inherited as partial dominance, and the number of effective genes was estimated to be one to two for each of the characters. There were more dominant alleles present in parent-varieties than recessive alleles on all characters except days to flower, and these were increasing in their effects on yield, stalk height and leaf length, and decreasing in their effects on days to flower and leaves per plant. The estimated broad and narrow heritabilities of five characters were somewhat high, and those of leaves per plant and days to flower were eapecially h
