The present study was pursued to obtain the useful informations on minimizing cold injury of rice plant in the regions where low temperature is causes problems. The experiments were carried out at Sangju Substation of Yongnam Crops Experiment Station, Korea from 1983 to 1986. Japonica varieties showed more tolerance to low temperature than the Tongil type (Indica/Japonica) cultivars at seedling stage. Resistance to low temperature had many phases at different growth stages. Degree of cold tolerance at seedling stage was not always related to the reproductive stage. Reduction in plant height, length of culm and panicles, and the number of tiller and panicle by the cold water irrigation were greater in Tongil type varieties than those of Japonica ones. Tongil type varieties showed poor pani1058cle exsertion and retarded leaf development under low water temperature condition. Partial panicle exsertion was related to suppressed elongation of the first internode from the top in Tongil type varie
