A new rice variety "Namyeongbyeo" was developed from a multiple cross, Milyang 40//IR10157/Milyang 40///Milyang 43/IR5533, at the Yeongnam Crops Experiment Station of Rural Development Administration in 1986. Its heading date was about 4 days later than that of Taebaegbyeo in ordinary culture. Namyeongbyeo has a good plant type with erect leaves and resistance to blast, stripe virus, dwarf virus, bacterial leaf blight, brown planthopper, small brown planthoppers and green leafhopper, and moderate resistance to black streaked dwarf virus and white tip. It has short grains with low amylose content and good grain quality. The yield potential of Namyeongbyeo was about 10 % higher (5.69 t/ha) than that of Taebaegbyeo in the regional adaptatio0954n yield trials of 72 locations during 1985-1986. It can be adaptable for the single cropping area in the southwestern coastal and southern plain in K
