Effects of continuous cultivation of upland, industrial and forage crops on soil chemical composition and crop yields

The need to investigate the changes of soil chemical composition and yields of major upland, industrial and forage crops due to continuous croppings on the same plots from 1980 to 1986 in Suwon, Korea prompted this study to improve soil fertility and cropping systems. Corn, barley, wheat, soybean, adzuki bean, sweet potato, sesame, peanut, tall fescue, orchard grass, radino clover, and alfalfa were grown on the same plots for seven years under their standard cultural practice conditions. Mean values of soil acidity, organic matters, phosphorus and potassium content of top soil were higher than sub soil than for top soil suggesting that deeper ploughing and heavier fertilization balanced would be needed for the continuous monocropping or double croppin0899g of the crops. The plots of white potato, soybean, adzuki bean, sesame, peanut, radino clover, tall fescue, barley-soybean were higher in mean values of soil acidity than fallow plot, but those of corn, alfalfa, orchard grass, and wheat-adzuki bean were lower or similar to the fallow
