Comparative study on the charcoaling effects of an empty soil drum as retort and the traditional method of charring [Philippines]
1984
Victorio, M.S. | Navarro, C.
A 100 kg sample of ipil-ipil wood with an approximate moisture content of 62 percent was used. Charcoaling time in the retort was 5.17 hrs and 20 hrs in the traditional method. The retort method gave a 32.28 percent charcoal recovery while the traditional method recorded 23.33 percent recovery. The emission of non-condensible gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane started at 3 to 4 hours after heating the retort with a temperature range of 258 C to 275 C. Temperatures attained in the retort and furnace were 454.67 C and 543.33 C, respectively. The calculated construction cost of the retort was P808.25 while the traditional method cost of P479.20. Annual profit in the retort method was estimated at P2514.20 at 5 batch per week of operation while in the traditional method, the loss was P904.96 at 2 batch per week of operation
