Effect of extruded soybeans in a cassava meal basal diet on the performance and the carcass quality of growing finishing pigs

A study was made to determine the effects of a cassava meal (CM) basal diet with extruded soybeans (ESB), on performance and carcass characteristics of growing pigs. The ESB contribute oil, which increases the energy content of the diet and a2048ids in overcoming the dusty nature of cassava, and provides as main protein supplements. In the experiment, forty Large White + Land race pigs (20 barrows and 20 gilts), initially averaging 28 kg body weight, were used in randomized complete block design. Pigs were randomly assigned on the basis of sex and initial weight to one of the five dietary treatments, which supplemented and/or non-supplemented with soybean meal (SBM), fish meal (FM) or 0.20 percent DL-methionine (Met.): (T1) broker rice (ER) - SBM - FM (control); (T2) all of the BR in (T1) was replaced by mixtures of CM and ESB; (T3) CM - ESB - FM; (T4) CM - ESB and (T5) CM - ESB - 0.20 percent Met. There was no significant differences in their effects on average daily gain, feed intake and feed conversion efficiency on pigs fed on the five dietary treatments. Replacement all of the BR with mixtures of CM and ESB (T2) had no adverse effect on performance of pigs. There was a trend for pigs fed diets containing high level of ESB (T3, T4 and T5) to gain faster and more efficiency than the diets containing low level of ESB (T2). Pigs fed diets supplemented with 0.20 percent Met. (T5) were improved performance characteristics as well as those on BR based diets (T1). Pigs fed diets containing high level of ESB due to increased soybean oil resulted in a greater proportion of fat and lesser lean weight in the carcass.
