Two short-stalked winter cultivars "Aibian 1" and "Nonglin 10" were each crossed reciprocally with four conventional cultivars to study the inheritance of dwarfness and segregation of several agronomic traits. Results showed that the dwarf gene of "Aibian 1" was partially dominant and differed from the recessive one of "Nonglin 10". Correlation analysis revealed that the number of infertile spikelets increased, the number of kernel in the main spike decreased, the weight of kernel per spike and per plant decreased parrallely with the decrease of the plant height in hybrids, although there were differences in behaviour among cross combinations. The F2 progenies from "Aibian 1" x "8582-201" produced some desirable dwarf types with a mean plant height of 44.7 cm and a high number of spikes per plant and uniform stand.
