Measures of water management for the protection of marshland north of lignite mining district
1988
Boehm, B. (Rheinbraun A.G., Koeln (Germany, F.R.)) | Trumpff, H.
Groundwater lowering is essential to excavate lignite coal from the open pit mines of the Rhineland mining district. Waterwork shut downs, subsoil sealing and support of the groundwater table by means of infiltration were examined in order to lessen the effects of groundwater lowering upon the vital marshland to the north of the district. As a result, a project has been set up to distribute 55 Million m3 of water per year along the fringe of the cone of depression into the subsoil and into brooks. By these measures, the groundwater table of the vital marshland of the Schwalm can be permanently ensured.
