The objective of this study was to examine the feeding value of ensiled sugar beet leaves with a minor proportion of tops. Experimental animals were adult whether sheep and lactating cows. Some of the cows were equipped with rumen fistulae and duodenal cannulae. In a feeding experiment, dairy cows in mid-lactation were fed diets similar to those for fistulated animals. Over a period of 12 weeks, no differences in milk yield and milk composition could be observed. In a second experiment, two groups of high-yielding cows in early lactation were fed the same amounts of basic feed but much higher amounts of concentrates (plus 40 %). With energy intake being the same, the crude fibre content in ration DM was 16,6 % (low proportion of ESBL) and 14,7 % (high proportion of ESBL), respectively. The animals on lower ESBL produced more milk (32,6 vs. 31,6 kg/d) and had a higher milk fat content (3.47 vs. 3,32 %).
